Optimum Viewing

This is the place to be to find out how browser versions and computer/browser settings affect your viewing of websites in general and photographs in particular. Please note: The following information is geared towards Windows 95/98 users. Sorry Mac users - I don't have the expertise. A good place to start is finding out what your current settings are.

Affect on Viewing

Change

Monitor Brightness and Contrast

The monitor contrast affects how much detail you see in the brightest and darkest areas of an image. With proper adjustment you will see all the detail that is in the digital image file. Monitor brightness levels can also be adjusted to your room's light level and your own comfort. Monitor adjustment knobs are on your monitor. To be guided through the adjustment process, click here.

Color Depth

Color Depth refers to how many colors can be displayed on your monitor. When viewing text only this is not an issue. If you wish to view continuous tone photographs, you will need a least a 16-bit setting, and preferably higher. The options you have are determined by your video card.   Changes to color depth settings are made through the Display icon on the Control Panel. Click here for detailed instructions.

Screen Resolution

Screen resolution settings determine how much information is put on your screen, and correspondingly, the size of that information. While this site is viewable at a lower setting of 480x640, you will need to do more scrolling. As with color depth settings, your options are limited by your video card. Screen resolution settings, like color depth settings, are made through the Display icon on the Control Panel. Learn how to change them.

Browser Versions and Settings

This site was designed to run best on Internet Explorer 4.0,  Netscape 4.7, and higher versions. You can download the latest browser versions at there respective web sites. Viewing with earlier versions may result in pages not loading or functioning as designed. Both browsers have settings you can change to personalize the way you view web pages. There are many ways to personalize your viewing of the web. I will show you how for  both Internet Explorer and Netscape users.
